![]() ![]() They are learning that things are NOT in fact black and white, and the world is more complicated than it felt in the past. “When does someone say something, and mean another?” “What do you feel is a lie?” “How can someone use truths to tell a lie? v.v?” “What is the other side to this story?” I think this is a good project particular for middle school age because there worlds are just starting to get bigger. His style is great for teaching positive and negative space as well, and the skill I would emphasis in this lesson. Because of this, I think kids will be excited to work against an artist they may recognize, helping in motivating. Banksy uses them to make us think of peace instead. And yet, we have the juxtaposition of a bouquet of flowers that are so out of place to the rest of the scene. Rage is stated in the title, but the figure in riot gear gives us the sense of a rage that’s poured over, popped. From this depiction we can infer that Banksy is making a remark not only on war, but the emotions that come with it. This is also given emphasis by the fact that the flowers are the only thing in color, and vibrantly so. But then we notice that instead of throwing a Molotov cocktail, he is throwing flowers. From his active pose and scarf covered face we think of violence and riots. He looks somewhere between anger and discouraged. By using positive and negative space we are able to see a full figured and realistic human, with details like the shadow on his jeans, light on the sweatshirt and most importantly, the expression in his eyes. The first thing we notice is the unique method Banksy has used to create the man on an exterior wall. ![]()
